Aquaponics module

Aquaponics is the name given to the plant and fish farming system that combines aquaculture with hydroponics, which refers to the cultivation of plants in water.

This system is carried out in a symbiotic environment, where the aquaculture water feeds the hydroponic system, in which the waste is decomposed into nitrites and, subsequently, into nitrates by nitrifying bacteria. These nitrates are then used by the plants as nutrients, after which the water, once these nutrients are retained, returns to the fish tanks.

Our system has been awarded as winner of the FAO MedFish4Ever Award on innovative practices in aquaculture research.
