Aquaculture goes beyond farming animals for human consumption; it encompasses a broader mission. It is not only about feeding humanity but also leveraging the technological advancements in aquatic farming for the conservation of species. The expertise developed in breeding, rearing, and maintaining aquatic organisms under controlled conditions can be instrumental in preserving endangered species, restoring ecosystems, and enhancing biodiversity.
A wonderful example is the collaboration between French and Catalan environmental authorities for recovering the European sturgeon in the Ebro River. Thus, 50 sturgeons (1+) produced by ASSOCIATION MIGADO with the support of INRAE arrived yesterday at IRTA la Ràpita from St. Seurin sur l’Isle. Our goal is tag them with radioemitters and monitor their behaviour and feeding habits in the lower reaches of the Ebro river (Universitat de Vic – Universitat Central de Catalunya – Marc Ordeix Rigo). Keep tunned for further news on this ambitious conservation project.
